Ursa Major (UMa)
"The Great Bear"

Location : RA = 11h Dec = +55

Mythology : In Greek mythology, Callisto was transformed into a bear to escape the jealous Juno. Her son, Arcas, did not recognize her and was about to slay her. The gods then grabbed Arcas and Callisto, by her tail, and dragged them into the heavens as the Great and Little Bears. (This is why Ursa Major has such a long tail.)

Main Attractions : The Big Dipper is without a doubt the sky's most famous asterism, and the only sky site that many people are able to identify. The members of the Big Dipper are actually a close star cluster and change shape dramatically in only 100,000 years. (A blink in astronomical terms.) M101 is the "Whirlpool" spiral galaxy and has magnificent arms. Because it is always visible, we recommend it to always be your first telescopic sight when beginning a night of exploration.
