Folklore : Canes Venatici was originally part
of the constellation Ursa Major, but was
given its own chunk of sky in the late seventeenth century. Not to be
confused with the Big and Little Dogs, Canis Major and Minor, this
constellation represents a pair of hunting dogs. The star Cor Caroli, which
means "heart of Charles" is fabled to have been named after King Charles II
of England by Edmund Halley. Others say that the original name of the star
was "Cor Caroli Regis Martyris", named after the execution of Charles I.
