"The Keel"
Mythology : Carina was once part of the magnificent and gigantic constellation Argo Navis, the ship of Jason and the Argonauts. The International Astronmical Union has since divided the Argo into three constellations.
Main Attractions :
Canopus is the second brightest star in the sky and is used as a navigation point
for spacecraft. The eighth magnitude star Eta Carinae has a very interesting
history. It started as a fourth mag. star and by April 1843 it outshone Sirius
until fading back to eighth mag. by 1868. It is currently thought of as a variable
star, although it may be a recurring supernova.
