Capricornus (Cap)
"The Sea Goat"

Location : RA = 21h Dec = -20

Mythology : This constellation has been around for what seems like forever. The sea goat's image can be found on stones from ancient Mesopotamia, and Capricornus is Sumarian for "goat-fish". In Greek mythology, Capricornus is linked with the boy-god Pan. Pan saw some beautiful nymphs and goddesses playing, so to impress them he turned himself into a goat and jumped into a nearby stream. Upon hitting the water, the bottom half of his body turned into a fish's tail. Zeus was so amused he placed the sea goat into the heavens.

Main Attractions Capricornus is where the Sun resides during the winter solstice for those in the northern hemisphere, therefore giving its name to the Tropic of Capricorn found on a globe. (Also see Tropic of Cancer). Globular star cluster M30 is worth taking note of.
